Prominent scientist Ameenah Gurib-Fakim was on 5 June 2015 sworn in as President of Mauritius. With this, Gurib-Fakim became the first female president of Mauritius, which gained independence from Britain in 1968 and replaced Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state in 1992.
Ameenah, an internationally-renowned scientist and biologist, succeeded Kailash Purryag who stepped down from his post on 29 May 2015.
At the time of her appointment as President, Gurib-Fakim was director of Centre for Phytotherapy Research (CEPHYR) in Mauritius, which carries out research on plants for use in cosmetics, nutrition and therapy.
Earlier, the Parliament on 4 June 2015 cleared her name for the ceremonial position of the Indian island nation after she was designated for the post by Government of Mauritius.
An alumni of the universities of Exeter and Surrey in Britain, she also serves as the chairman of organic chemistry at Mauritius University. She has also worked with the World Bank and other international institutions as well.
