The statue was unveiled after it was restored by Chinese experts in seven years at an expense of 60 million yuan (9.8 million US dollar).
The restoration work of the statue, one integral part of the Dazu Rock Carvings, was started on 18 April 2008.
Restoration project
During the restoration project, the workers restored 830 hands and 227 instruments of the statue by using one million gold foils. The 7.7 metres high and 12.5 metres wide statue was carved during the Southern Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). However, the initial cravings date back to Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 AD).
Zhan Changfa, a researcher of the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, was the in charge of the project.
